What is the first thing that pops into your head when you hear the names Bill Gates and Warren Buffet? These two men are the faces of wealth and entrepreneurship, and no one can deny that their success and entrepreneurial minds have changed the way of the world.  But what if you knew their secrets to achieving such success?

In an article posted on entrepreneur.com, both Gates and Buffet were asked to write down one thing they each felt accredited to their success. They both came up with the same word… FOCUS.

So how does one stay focused?

Our world is full of noise and distractions, and getting side tracked is very easy. Multitasking has become a way of living and learning therefore, being able to focus can be a hard skill to learn.  But there is hope!  The below tips can help get your focus back on track!

  1. Set realistic goals:Easier said than done right? Many of us have goals that carry us through life. Financial goals, personal goals, career goals: these are just some examples of what many of us would consider life goals. But with so many distractions out there, how do we ensure we reach them? Creating a plan of milestones can help you reach a particular goal. By creating a timeline or a guide, you are giving yourself a personalized blueprint that can help you get there. And if you are anything like me, having a check list with steps to follow makes everything seem more attainable.
  2. Follow your gut:In the same article, it was mentioned that Warren Buffett has had more success as an investor than anyone else in history. He doesn’t follow the expected paths that are advised to him. Instead, he sticks with types of businesses he understands and only invests if he feels necessary. Following your own path will allow you to make decisions based on your gut feelings. If you know what you are doing or are familiar with a product or idea, you will have a better chance at making the right decision, because you know what works for you.
  3. Learn the rules of the game:“You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else.”- Albert Einstein.  Learning and understanding something ahead of time, will make your focus stay on track.   Being good at what you do starts with having the knowledge and understanding before taking action.
  4. Time is non-refundable, use it with intention!:Time management is an art, and hard for many. Life gets busy and learning how to plan, exercising productively, and increasing efficiency is something that many strive to master. So in trying to achieve focus, it may be helpful to re-evaluate your “to-do’s”. Checking in once in a while on all your responsibilities and activities will give you a chance to make sure you are not spending time on unnecessary and unproductive items, leaving time for the things that really matter and that ultimately, will make you focus on your final goals.

So whether you are starting something new or want to re-evaluate your current situation, start with these 4 steps to help you get focused! And who knows, one day you may become the next Bills Gates!
